How I Created This.. A quick & easy Photoshop tutorial to try
This quick guide shows you how to use the Hue/Saturation colorize tool, and how to feather and re-colour selections. I used one of the designs from this Bird & Feathers set, and opened one of the feather PNG images in Photoshop. The image was black to begin with.
I duplicated the layer Layer>Duplicate three times and arranged them as I wanted, then merged the layers. You could also work on each layer individually of course.
Next I used Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation to colorize the image in a blue-green tone.Tick the box at the bottom right to colorize, then increase the saturation and the lightness sliders before changing the hue.
To create a shadowed effect on the feathers, I used Filter>Render>Lighting Effects to shade the image so that it was darker at the bottom.
To achieve the various soft colours within the feathers, you can use the Lasso selection tool to select the parts of the image I wanted to re-colour. The trick here is to then feather the selction (yeah.. excuse the pun) to the colours are nicely graduated without any harsh lines. So go to Select> Modify>Feather (or shift+F6) and choose a radius of about 40 or so (see image below)
Finally go back to Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation and change the colour of your selected area.
And that’s pretty much it. You can use this technique to colorize any black image and make it your own.
