I’ve just joined Instagram (i know, I’m late climbing on that particular bandwagon) and have been enjoying finding some really talented illustrators and artists. I thought I’d share some of them with you. If you have any suggestions for other artists that you like that are on instagram, please leave their @tag in the comments section. You can follow me by searching #melsbrushes or going to http://instagram.com/melsbrushesI’m mostly using it for my personal illustrations, experiments and works in progress, and art I’ve created on my Kindle Fire (more on that lovely little piece of kit at a later date).

First up we have @sisita10 She creates lovely quirky character illustrations. Great colours and a slightly painterly feel.

Next, I really like the lovely detailed and pattern filled pen lineart of @majasbok

Love love the work of @sashakru, an accomplished Russian illustrator

@firefluff creates the most soft and magical storybook style digital paintings.

@amaiaarrazola, a Barcelona based illustrator, creates, among other things, embroidered illustrations. Really great idea.

@lewisfarrow is an animation student and doodler from the UK, his works have a wonderful line quality, and always quirky subject matter.

@ka_sa_rin creates surreal but beautiful work

The Owl & The Pussycat – Nursery Rhyme Vector Graphic Illustrations

A random conversation about old one pound notes in the studio the other day led to the Edward Lear nonsense rhyme going through my head. So I decided to illustrate the poem, and share the finished graphics with you.. You can buy them from the shop

You know the Poem? It’s wonderful..

The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped up in a five pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
‘O lovely Pussy! O Pussy my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,
You are,
You are!
What a beautiful Pussy you are!

Here’s an illustration I did with the graphics. This is going to be available as a print soon for my open studios exhibition which is coming up in May in Stroud, Gloucestershire. It’s getting busy in the studio, more time creating art and less time spent on GoldenBingo.co.uk! Anyway.. ff you are based anywhere near Stroud, it would be great to meet you. I’ll write a proper post about it all soon.

Free Commercial Use Font – Mels Brushes Drawn

This is my very first attempt at creating a font. I used a free site called http://www.myscriptfont.com/ . It’s pretty easy if you want to have a go yourself – you just print out a template, draw in your characters, then scan it back into your computer and upload it to the site. Doesn’t work perfectly but it’s quite interesting to play with. Anyway here’s my first attempt – you can download this and use it as you wish, commercial or personal use. A credit to this site would be very much appreciated. The font is in truetype format. Please note – I didn’t fill in ALL of the characters – a few are missing!

Happy new year everyone. Don’t know about you, but I’m winding up the creative juices for the new year. This means less sitting about eating wine and chocolate sadly, but I’m looking forward to getting back into some creativity. So, a trip to trendy Brighton town over the holiday inspired this tongue-in-cheek oh-s0o-ironic set of hipster designs. Really should have included some old school computers and star wars action figures.. but hey, i’m not perfect. And as it’s my first free set of the year, it’s in high resolution, and includes a vector file as well. Special treat.
